Westlife’s show in Macau was held in the Venetian Casino’s Arena. To say the Venetian is big is an understatement, apart from housing a full size arena, hotel, huge shopping mall complete with 3 canals and gondolas, food court and massive casino, it was also almost impossible to find an exit to the outside world.
After seeing almost no daylight for 4 days, I managed to escape into the outside world. Across the highway is an area of traditional Portuguese colonial houses, some converted to museums, some offices. Outside to the front of the houses is a well kept park full of lotus flowers, walking amongst the blooms, the scent was amazing.
At the far end of the park is a circular area where an exhibition of statues of me had been erected. I found this to be quite surreal. I mean why would you make statues of me?
Behind the houses is a funicular up to a large area with a bandstand, beyond this was quite a nice hill for an afternoons exploration.
Then it was back to the no windows and fake sky of the Venetian.
Except on the way back I came across a young couple trying to take a selfie in front of the lotus blooms on his mobile. As I have tendency to do, I offered to take a photo for them, no sooner had I said it, the girl had whipped out a pro SLR camera from nowhere, shoved it in my hand and insisted on me taking loads of shots of them around the park. I was there 15 minutes before I could make my excuses.
